Keynote for the 2025 Annual Fall Conference!

SCCDA is excited to announce the keynote speaker for the 2025 Fall Conference is the South Carolina Space Consortium!

Under the NASA mandate for “Capability Enhancement” states, the SCSGC works to increase the State’s aerospace related research infrastructure. The SCSGC members devise programs to encourage researchers and students to conduct aerospace related research and to address the science education pipeline problem.

2025 - 2026 President's Message

Dear SCCDA Family,

I hope everyone is thriving in 2025. I want to express my gratitude to all who supported my election as the president of SCCDA for the upcoming year. As the new president, my aim is to build on the achievements of our previous leaders. I would like to acknowledge past president Jewel Canty and the SCCDA board for preparing me to take on this role. As a result of Jewel’s leadership, SCCDA was able to build upon the momentum of the previous couple of years by hosting our first Spring Fling event, launching our website refresh, creating our association YouTube channel, increasing non-member Fall Conference attendance, and offering an association high of 8.5 CEUs.

After last year’s growth, it seems fitting that SCCDA’s theme of the 2025-2026 year is “Making Connections”. My goal is for the SCCDA to continue the work set forth by previous leadership and prioritize making connections with individuals and organizations interested in career and workforce development in our state and beyond.

Here is a list of objectives to support making connections in the coming year:

Enhance Statewide Presence (Regional Meetups)
Social Media Marketing Expansion (Weekly Content and Engagement)
Branding Refresh
Increase SCCDA Membership (Organizational and new CDFs)

Enhance Statewide Presence

Our objective is to organize regional meetups twice a year during the summer and fall. These 1.5-hour sessions will occur between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. at career development-related organizations and agencies. The meetups will serve as exclusive networking opportunities and site visits for SCCDA members, offering CEUs based on GCDF core competencies, such as Promotion and Public Relations. Additionally, we plan to donate $500 each to four non-profit organizations, totaling $2,000 annually, while collaborating with related professional associations.

Social Media Marketing Expansion

We intend to post weekly on SCCDA’s social media platforms, including LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram. To streamline our efforts, we will establish a Buffer Social Media Management Account. Our marketing strategy will feature an overview video of SCCDA, an annual marketing calendar, and the launch of SCCDA merchandise through an online storefront.

Branding Refresh

SCCDA has recently unveiled our new branding campaign, aimed at refreshing our image and better aligning our identity with our mission. This initiative emphasizes inclusivity and welcomes all career development professionals, regardless of their organizational ties or interests.

Increase SCCDA Membership

Our goal is to welcome five new organizational members during the 2025-2026 period. A comprehensive organizational membership policy and procedures will be developed, emphasizing membership benefits while introducing new discounts and rates. The SCCDA will explore offering one year of free membership to recent CDF class graduates and coordinate with statewide CDF instructors for implementation.

SCCDA is looking forward to these projects and believes they will greatly benefit the members we serve. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or suggestions on how SCCDA can make a greater impact in our mission to INSPIRE!

Happy new year! This is always an exciting time for everyone as we aspire for growth and change, whether it’s goals for personal growth or career growth. When looking forward to a year of growth, I find it helpful to reflect on the year behind us and what gains were accomplished:

“The first quarter 2024 personal income increased in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The national percent change was 7.0 percent and South Carolina led the country with an increase of 9.5 percent.” click for source
“Good data undergirds sound policy and can provide our current and emerging workforce with information that will accelerate their path to economic mobility. Firms who file quarterly Unemployment Compensation wage reports to SC Department of Employment and Workforce (SCDEW) will be required beginning with first quarter 2024 reports (due by April 30, 2024) to provide Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) codes and number of hours worked for each employee. South Carolina is only the fifth state in the country to require SOC reporting. The others are Alaska, Louisiana, Washington, and West Virginia (Jan 2024).” click for source

“In the 2024 version of CNBC’s annual America’s Top States for Business Rankings, South Carolina ranked 19th overall. Since being ranked 39th overall in 2021, South Carolina has improved its ranking by 20 spots with a 36th overall ranking in 2022, a 27th overall ranking in 2023, and this year’s 19th overall ranking. The rankings measure each state on 128 metrics in 10 key categories of competitiveness like infrastructure, workforce, economy, quality of life, etc. The state also made tremendous improvements in its workforce rankings, jumping from a ranking of 31st in 2023 to 17th in 2024.“click for source
“From October 2023 to October 2024, South Carolina added 61,000 jobs, a 2.6 percent annual increase. This was the third highest increase in the nation reported during that period. Idaho took first place with an increase of 3.2 percent, followed by Missouri at 2.8 percent.” click for source

SC Poetry and Art National winners May 2024 - 17 from SC, which was 42.5% of national winners!
Segra Park - SCCDA donated 50 tickets to military families. SCCDA was recognized at the game with an announcement, including a 45-second commercial on the big board, and a kiosk to share info about SCCDA
Super Successful Fall 2024 Conference - 62% of conference attendees were non-members, demonstrating the interest in the community for the SCCDA mission to INSPIRE (Fall 2025 Conference will be in Charleston!)
Total CEU opportunities from SCCDA - 8.5 (In 2025 there will be 10 CEU opportunities)

Reflecting on our strengths and what we have to be grateful for will empower us to continue momentum and growth as we move forward in an upward trajectory!

As career development practitioners in South Carolina, we can be assured we are not only doing great work within our own constituencies, but we also have many resources and support within the state to help us continue to provide quality and effective services to our clients and consumers.

Happy Fall!

Fall is personally my favorite time of year for so many reasons: the welcome change in weather, the beautiful scenery of fall colors, fall festivals and the state fair, Halloween, and pulling out all my favorite boots and scarves!

Besides all the festivities we can enjoy with family and friends, fall is always the season of change. And how appropriate it is that September is South Carolina Workforce Development Month. Dear SCCDA Family,

I am excited to have the opportunity to serve as the SCCDA leader for the 2024-2025 year! Thank you to the SCCDA family for allowing me to continue the work of our former leaders.

Susan Bennett led the SCCDA 2023-2024 year with the mission of “Value Added”. With her leadership, SCCDA has grown in many ways, including retaining and growing membership, increasing the value of our organization to its members through members only opportunities and resources, and fostered a greater sense of community within the organization by establishing sponsorships at the Fall 2023 conference, hosting quarterly virtual chats open to the public, and launching a “Did You Know” social media campaign.

It seems only appropriate after an amazing year of growth for SCCDA that the theme of the 2024-2025 year is “Momentum”. This year my goal is that SCCDA will continue the momentum gained from adding value and move forward even stronger as South Carolina’s association for everyone who has an interest in career and workforce development!

A few objectives to build momentum in the coming year include:

Develop partnerships with community and business leaders
Grow the SCCDA social media presence to include YouTube
Host regional in-person networking events

The SCCDA family comprises all career development constituencies: K-12, higher education, government and community, business and industry, and private practice. By utilizing our existing membership, we can develop strong partnerships with the community, leading to more professional development opportunities, sponsorship opportunities, and member resources.

The SCCDA technology and communication teams have worked hard to grow the SCCDA social media presence and communications to membership. This year, the teams will work together to build the SCCDA YouTube channel as another resource for members and to expand our social media presence.

Now that our society has adapted to the pandemic, I find it appropriate to remind career practitioners of the power of in-person networking! We connect and learn so much when we meet in person, and that is when we get the real human experience. SCCDA will host one quarterly meet-up in each of the 4 regions of the state (Upstate, Midlands, Pee Dee, and Lowcountry) as an opportunity to share best practices, network, and grow our membership and partnerships.

With the amazing resources, experience, membership, and talented board members already within SCCDA, I know this year will be filled with momentous momentum! I am thrilled to lead SCCDA this year to continue its mission of inspiring all career and workforce development professionals in our state!

Warm Greetings SCCDA members and friends!

I am honored and humbled to serve as the new President of South Carolina Career Development Association. I am grateful to all of our members for your trust in me to lead SCCDA through its next phase of growth and development.

It would be remiss of me if I didn’t mention all the greats who came before me! Sylvie Golod led passionately getting SCCDA back up and running. Sherry Williams led strategically providing order to what Sylvie started. Aimeé Carter led us resiliently through COVID. And, Brenda Gardner led inspirationally while bringing the fire back! It’s my hope that I lead authentically.

We’ve been able to accomplish great things as an organization. As we move forward, we have many exciting opportunities to expand and improve. I am committed to working with all of our members to ensure that we achieve our goals and build a stronger, more vibrant, and more impactful South Carolina Career Development Association.

It is my hope that we can and will be able to enthusiastically answer, “What is the benefit of being a member of SCCDA?” If I had to choose a theme for this year, it would be, “Value Added.” We will continue to add value to our organization as well as to ourselves.

My primary goals as President are to:

1. Retain and grow our membership

2. Increase the value of our organization to our members

3. Foster a greater sense of community within our organization.

To grow and retain our membership, we will expand our reach to career development professionals across the entire state of South Carolina in all constituency groups and provide resources and support to promote growth in their careers and the people they serve. To do this, we will continue to be responsive to our members' needs, offering programming and services that are relevant, accessible, and effective.

Another goal is to increase the value of our organization to our members. We want to be the go-to source for career development professionals, giving knowledge, know-how, and tools necessary to be successful in our work. To achieve this, we must continually monitor the most recent developments in our industry's trends and body of knowledge, as well as ensure that the programs and services we provide are as creative and effectivve as possible.

Yet another important area of concentration is collaboration. Together, we are stronger, and by collaborating with others, we can accomplish a lot.

In order to take advantage of our combined talents and accomplish our common objectives, I think we should be looking for opportunities to work together and form partnerships with groups that share our values.

Additionally, I believe that we need to foster a greater sense of community within our organization. We must continue to create opportunites for our members to communicate and form bonds with one another both offline and online.

As we cross the complicated and constantly changing world of career development, we ought to be celebrating our accomplishments, disclosing our struggles, and helping one another.

Finally, I want to say that I am enthusiastic about the future of our organization. I think that we are in a great position to have a big influence. Together, we can do this.

I'm committed to working with all of you to accomplish our objectives and develop a South Carolina Career Development Association that is more powerful, vibrant, and interconnected. I'm eager to lead our organization as president.

2022 - 2023 President Farewell Message

2022-2023 Farewell President's Message

Hello SCCDA members and friends!

If 2022-23 were a movie, it would be The Return to In-Person … starring robust meetings, lively workshops, and engaging conferences.

I am so grateful for the ability to discuss and collaborate with others around the state on workforce issues, and after two years of disruption to varying degrees from COVID, the extroverted portion of me is dancing with joy.

Sometimes it takes the absence of something to understand its power, and that’s been the case for me with curtailing in-person interaction with COVID. I missed the collaborating with others, casual conversations turning into action, and brainstorming better ideas.

For SCCDA, there has been equal power in this year returning to in-person. Membership has grown, we produced an in-person conference in November with excellent speakers and networking opportunities, and the virtual portion we retained – the virtual chats – served as a link in between.

The fall conference at Saluda Shoals on “Navigating Mental Health in the Workplace” couldn’t have been more timely. Dr. Samer Touma’s keynote, the AbleSC session with Dori Tempio, Dr. April Scott, and Jessica Pooser with SC Vocational Rehabilitation all provided relevant presentations.

And who could forget the most popular catch-phrase of the day?

In encouraging taking annual leave to promote self-care, PTO (paid time off) really stands for Prepare The Others!

At our latest virtual chat in March, distinguished Toastmaster Lefford Fate spoke about “springing forward,” reminding us that we can’t fill from an empty cup. It’s a well used phrase, but what struck me was one comment: we must be a river versus a reservoir.

There’s a lot more in store for 2023-24, with the leadership of our new president, Susan Bennett, and I can’t wait for the highlight reel next year!

President's Message

Hello SCCDA members and friends!

While driving home, a headline from this week’s business news jerked me to attention. “Japanese “flying car’ manufacturer to enter US market with South Carolina headquarters”? For anyone who watched the Jetsons as a child, there is no doubt anymore -- we’ve arrived. Sure, Jetson gadgets have incrementally become reality: the flat screen TV, the video chat, Rosey the robotic maid – or at least the Rosey the Roomba. But a flying car?

Welcome, 2023! The company bringing the “flying car” is SkyDrive, which made the announcement this month at the annual VFS eVTOL Symposium in Mesa, Arizona; it has plans to open an office in Beaufort County.

Electric vehicles are gaining market share at a much quicker pace than predicted, now expected to outsell combustion engines by 2040 – just 17 years from now. In January, a company called Proterra in Greer produced its first EV, or electric vehicle battery. And just a month before, Redwood Materials a producer of anode and cathode battery components for electric vehicles, announced plans to establish operations in Berkeley County.

The company’s $3.5 billion investment, which marks the largest economic development announcement in the history of South Carolina, will create 1,500 new jobs. This South Carolina campus will create a circular supply chain for electric vehicles.

It’s true, South Carolina has become a launching pad for the future. What does this mean for career development and workforce professionals? Change.

And lots of it. Which means your skills are more important than ever as the career and workforce landscape morphs continuously. The advice you give clients, be they students, seniors, or anything in between, must be timely and accurate so they can make informed career decisions.

That’s why associations like SCCDA are so important. We provide professional development opportunities for members to stay abreast of trends, make contacts, and network with other professionals in a range of constituencies. Our fall conferences have been packed with practical information, and our virtual chats allow you to network and stay up-to-date without traveling to yet another meeting. Fall 2022 President's Message

Hello SCCDA members and friends!

Finally! There is a whiff of fall in the air, and a morning chill that surprises me every year after the unrelenting heat of summer.

Besides the cooler weather, pumpkins and football, fall brings our annual professional development conference on November 9. And this year’s promises to be the best ever!

We are back in person at Saluda Shoals River Center, which alone is great news after two plus years of isolation due to COVID. But our conference topic is one that resonates deeply right now: Navigating Mental Health in the Workplace.

According to the Department of Labor, nearly 1 in 5 American may experience some form of mental health condition each year. In Lyra Health’s 2022 State of Workforce Mental Health, employees’ mental health is at an all-time low.

“Nearly a third (31 percent) of workers surveyed said their mental health has declined over the past year—up from 24 percent at the end of 2020,” it said.

Dr. Samer Touma delivering the keynote address, “Mental Health Matters.” and surely the double meaning is intentional. Of course, we will discuss mental health matters, but with the statistics currently being experienced in the workplace, mental health matters above most else.

There will also be sessions on mental health topics from AbleSC, USC, SC Thrive, and Vocational Rehabilitation.

Summer 2022 President's Message

Hello SCCDA members and friends!
Greetings as we head into the hottest months of the year, but also the ones when many memories are made. I am humbled to serve as your SCCDA president for 2022-23, and look forward to growing the organization in numbers and in opportunities for professional development.

My first act as president will be to publicly acknowledge Aimee Carter’s service as president before me for not one, but two years. So thank you to Aimee, who carried SCCDA through with skill and heart. And she did so during an unprecedented time of uncertainty.

The pandemic has been a silent shadow with all of us since 2020. But what impact did it really have on our clients, our students, and the workforce? There is anecdotal evidence in abundance, as students and adults have spent critical developmental years in the virtual environment without hands-on learning or in-person social interaction.

Generation Z, in particular, seems to be disproportionately affected. According to an Indeed.com survey, 82% of Generation Z said they have never worked in an in-person office environment full time. Of that percentage, 85 percent said they worry that they are at a disadvantage when it comes to learning professional “soft skills”

A new partnership between the SC Department of Commerce, SC Competes, and Tallo tackles a portion of that question with four available assessments to better identify skills gaps for long term career retention of Generation Z workforce.

The new pilot resource is available for 16- to 24-year-olds who have been negatively impacted by COVID (and really, who hasn’t?). Four assessments are available to gauge knowledge in five core professional competencies: Communication, Drive for Results, Customer Service, Adaptability and Critical Thinking. These four assessments are in: General Employability, Manufacturing Employability, IT Employability and Healthcare Employability. They take clients/students roughly 20-25 minutes and include an individualized report on where they stand in that industry and competency compared to their peers.

This tool is free until September 15, 2022. If you have clients or know of individuals in this age range, this is a great resource to dive into those skill gaps and create remedies before they enter the workforce.

What career and workforce development work do you do with your respective constituency group?

In my current role as Regional Career Specialist I work with school districts within the Pendleton Region. The region is comprised of Anderson, Oconee, and Pickens. My initiatives include collaborating with stakeholders from K-12^th grade to provide greater awareness around career and workforce needs in our region.

What do you love most about the work that you do?

I love getting to help others. I have a passion for seeing others succeed, and my current role allows me make a difference with adults and students. For me, this is the best of both worlds!

President's Message Spring 2022

Hello SCCDA members and friends!

As I type, I hear the tune of The Beatles song, Hello Goodbye, play in my head. This will be my last newsletter message as your president.

Serving in this role for the past two years has been both challenging and rewarding. I’m thankful for a supportive board and core members who have hung with us. In just a few months, our president-elect and founding member, Brenda Gardner, will assume the role. You all are in good hands!

This is a busy time of year for everyone, and I find myself pushing the deadline to get something meaningful on paper for our dedicated communications committee to share. I looked back at previous messages and thought about how it really isn’t what I say (you read), it is the fact you’re reading it – you’re engaged, connected, and interested. We all know that’s important, but it is tough to practice for ourselves and model for others.

Experiencing thankfulness and growing in our profession

Happy Thanksgiving! This greeting kicks off the holiday season in America. We've heard and said it often the past few weeks. Most of the time, we even consciously mean it. Yet, on occasion, this phrase feels no more than a routine thing to say throughout November. Although the pandemic lingers, so many things are returning to normal. So, I’ve been thinking a lot about how to be both authentic and thankful, particularly during the hustle and bustle of the holidays as we pass Thanksgiving and go into December. What feels right and true nowadays? What am I truly grateful for? How can I express thankfulness in a way that feels genuine and is well-received?
As career developers, you can probably relate. Self-reflection is common in our profession. And, for such insight, I’m truly grateful. Because of our interest, skills, and talents, we are positioned to not only challenge ourselves to grow personally and professionally but are capable and equipped to do the same for others. That’s a gift that keeps on giving!
This also reminds me of ideas shared in our recent conference, Back to the Future, hosted virtually earlier this month. Over 50 attendees were challenged to explore awkwardness to strengthen ourselves and our inclusive relationships. We learned how mindfulness is one of many ways we can combat pandemic brain. And, in the spirit of looking at things differently, we can flip the script on the traditional résumé.

So, what’s the connection to thankfulness and authenticity? The conference revealed humans can be both authentic and awkward at the same time. For me, I can be truly thankful under stress if I remain intentional. I can choose to see what used to be normal from a different lens and know that it’s OK. I can experience and express gratitude honestly because I choose this perspective.

Perhaps most importantly, I can acknowledge not everyone celebrates Thanksgiving for a variety of reasons. That’s fine. In fact, that’s great because I can learn from that and better understand the perspective and meaningful transitions of others.
So, as you say and/or hear “Happy Thanksgiving” each year, consider those around you. Think about it, and take it in. Smile and give yourself, your heart, and your brain a chance to experience it in the spirit of peace, love and belongingness we all long for.

Back to the future

That’s right. You don’t need a road, car, or time travel to participate in our next event. We’re keeping things virtual this fall with a conference sure to take you Back to the Future on November 10, 2021.Truth be told, we hoped to bring everyone back together, in person, like the good old days. But, we lived and learned in 2020, and delivering the content through your computer once again just makes good sense. While it may seem like we’re literally going backwards after experiencing such promise this spring, we must keep future focused as career developers. We can’t Marty McFly our way back in time and course correct history, but we can continue to develop ourselves and those around us so we are equipped for whatever the future holds.

Students in the Palmetto State Dominate poetry and art contest

South Carolina garnered nearly half of all national winners in the National Career Development Association’s 55th annual poetry and art contest celebrating National Career Development Month.

The theme for the 55th annual Poetry & Art contest was "My Future Career: Imagine the Possibilities!" And imagine the possibilities they did -- Palmetto State students had 23 winning submissions of the 48 at the national level, 9 of which were first place, according to state contest coordinator Kimberly Cartledge.

Cartledge is a member of the South Carolina Career Development Association, the local division of NCDA. The SCCDA is an all-inclusive and collaborative statewide organization of more than 90 industry professionals that connect on issues, policies and practices relating to career and workforce development, pathways, and transitions while inspiring one another to grow professionally!

The winning art and poetry entries for each division are displayed on the NCDA website, http://www.ncda.org, and at the upcoming Global Career Development Conference. National winners also receive a special certificate from NCDA.

Announcing the 2021 NCDA Virtual Conference Scholarship!

Current SCCDA members in good standing with the organization are invited to apply for this scholarship award covering the cost of registration for the 2021 NCDA Virtual Conference. This award is given in honor of our SCCDA Past Presidents as they continue to INSPIRE.

The conference will be delivered virtually June 29 – July 1, 2021. Qualifications and requirements are detailed in the attached application. To be considered for the scholarship, the completed application is due by 5:00 pm on Monday, May 24. Serving on the Elections Committee

ELECTIONS COMMITTEE:

Elections for SCCDA's Executive Board will open on March 1, 2021. Prior to presenting the slate of officers to the general membership for voting, we need 2 active members on the Elections Committee. If you have a desire to participate in SCCDA's leadership but have just a small amount of time to invest, this is the perfect short-term, volunteer opportunity. SCCDA is preparing for our annual elections for Board positions. The next term starts May 1, 2021 – April 30, 2022, and we are hoping you will consider joining us! Any SCCDA and NCDA member is qualified to run for the Board.

We are seeking to fill the President and President-Elect positions on the Executive Board. The guidelines are:

President:

Ideally should have served on the board before assuming the president-elect position. The candidates must have at least 2 years of membership with SCCDA and/or NCDA before candidacy.
Shall preside at all meetings of the Association and the Executive Committee of the Board
Shall exercise general supervision of all activities of the Association. This will include appointing people to serve on all standing committees as stipulated by the bylaws.
Shall submit an annual report including major achievements, concerns, financial standing, and changes to the Board upon leaving office, available to any member upon request. This report shall be stored in the SCCDA archive.
Must be a National Career Development Association (NCDA) member.
The approximate time involved per month in this role is 3-5 hours (2 hours for Board Meetings and approximately 1-3 hours for committee and/or project work, depending on specific projects). At times, this role may require more than 5 hours per month.

President's Letter Winter

A new year is upon us.

We will be ringing in the year 2021 in just a few short weeks. Our holiday celebrations will look and feel different this year as we continue to find ways to live, work, and love during this pandemic.

Many of us just can’t wait! The promise of hope, a fresh start, and renewal that accompanies each new year is especially needed. While I’m ready for some relief, I keep reminding myself that this moment, however challenging, should be remembered. I’m not talking about the annoying masks or constant physical calibration to maintain distance. I mean savoring the unique and special connections we are creatively making, the permission to slow down and stay home, the push to deepen my faith, and the call to be more kind and helpful to those in need.

This brings me straight to our fall conference theme of emotional intelligence. During my opening remarks I shared this simple definition -- the ability to identify and manage one’s own emotions, as well as the emotions of others. This year has given us plenty of opportunities to demonstrate and develop emotional intelligence. I imagine this year’s holiday season will as well, and I say let’s embrace it. We will be stronger career practitioners for it!

I wish you and your loved ones a safe and memorable holiday. And, here’s to a new year full of possibilities. Cheers!

As you contemplate your response, consider this quote from NPR podcaster Michele Norris:

"We are all going through a significant period of evolution…it feels burdensome right now because so much has been taken from us. But there's such an incredible opportunity to decide how you want to show up in the new world. Because it will be a new world. And my greatest hope is that we don't reach for normal, that we reach for better."

I’m struck by this idea of looking for something better, reaching for something beyond what used to be normal. The notion we can maximize this unbelievable moment as opposed to just getting by or sticking it out is a perspective I’m sharing at home, at work, and with you!

Hello SCCDA Members!

I am thrilled to be writing you as the 2020-21 president for the South Carolina Career Development Association, but I am compelled to share I’m not sure what to say.

I never thought I’d be drafting such a letter from a make-shift home office during a global pandemic. Chances are, you’re reading this on your phone or tablet with flooding thoughts about what work and life will be like next week, next month. Given our shared interest in career development, you likely have concerns about your students and clients. Tack on concerns about family and friends, and I’m right there with you. It is all very overwhelming, but hang with me… keep reading.

If ever there was a time to serve and support those who have an interest in career and workforce development issues in South Carolina, now is that time! That’s the mission of the SCCDA, and I’m so glad you are a part of it.

Many changes have occurred in a few short months, but SCCDA is ready for the challenge. Even before COVID-19, we were planning virtual professional development and hosted our first webinar at no cost to members in April. Don’t worry if you missed it. The SC division of the National Career Development Association has earned the outstanding state CDA award (emerging category), which will be presented in June at the NCDA's global conference in Houston.

This award is presented annually to the emerging division that exhibits outstanding performance through its accomplishments, best practices, and plans for the future.

"This award represents the culmination of several years of hard work from key individuals in our industry who truly exemplify our purpose to Inspire," said Sylvie Golod, SCCDA president. Richland Library first in Carolinas to offer accredited high school diploma program

The Richland County Library is offering an accredited program to help users earn their high school diplomas, the first library in the Carolinas to do so.

“It’s a second chance for individuals who missed the first time around being able to graduate with their high school diploma,” Business and Careers Manager Diane Luccy said.

Luccy said some employers who accept a high school diploma for hiring requirements do not accept a GED.

“There are certain jobs where if a person does not have a high school diploma, they will not be considered for the position,” she said.

The Career Online High School initiative is free for students, but they must apply for their high school transcripts. The program is open to Richland County residents 21 years and older with a library card. Participants must be willing to commit 8-10 hours each week on coursework.

“We work with these customers every day helping them with their resumes, their cover letters, online job applications,” Luccy said. “This is yet another flagship service that we’re able to offer them.”

Classes are taken online and each student is assigned an academic career coach. The library also offers workspace for program students.

“Richland Library has various resources, one of which is tutor.com. It is something that we offer where you can actually get live assistance from 3 p.m. – 11 p.m. just by logging into our website with your library card,” Luccy said. “The human interaction, I think, is so important and to know that there are resources available even if you didn’t go to high school when most of us did, in our teens, there is another opportunity out there.”

Students are required to take a self-assessment and required pre-requisite career preparation course. They have 18 months to earn the 18 credits necessary to complete their high school diploma. Part of the self-assessment includes an essay on why they want to complete their diploma and an interview.

The program costs the Richland Library $1,200 per student, but there is no cost for eligible participants.

The Richland Library is accepting students for the program. An informational session will be Wednesday from 6 – 8 p.m. at the Main Library on Assembly Street in Columbia. Click here for more information.

The 2019 NCDA Nominations and Elections Committee seeks applications for the following board positions:

Trustee for Agencies, Business/Industry, and Private Practice (3-year term)
Trustee-at-Large - focusing on the success of the NCDA Leadership Academy (3-year term)
Representative to the ACA Governing Council (3-year term starting July 1, 2020 – June 30, 2023)

Members are encouraged to self-nominate or recommend an interested NCDA colleague to the committee. The deadline for submission is January 20, 2019. The Nominations and Elections Committee will recommend their final slate of potential officers to the NCDA Board in February. Those approved to be on the slate will be forwarded for presentation (and voting to narrow the slate, if necessary) at the Annual Membership Meeting during the 2019 NCDA Global Conference in Houston. The final two candidates per position will be approved during that meeting and will move on to the general elections (June 29-Aug 15, 2019). The final vote will be announced by August 30, 2019. The term for these positions, with the exception of the Representative to the ACA Governing Council will start on October 1, 2019.
